new member. - 2005/10/21 16:59 Hi everyone.

I'm new to the seahorse world but not to saltwater aquariums. I have 10g nano reef and a 20g reef and I'm starting a 55g. I'm moving to 20 to the 55 and making the 20 only seahorse tank. My question are, how much live rock and sand do I leave in the tank? Right know the're is 20lbs of sand and 25 lbs of live rock, Do I need clean up crew for 2 seahorse.? What kind of filter would I need. I have a skimmer and a HOB filter right know. I've read that hob filter would be to much water flow for the horse. Thanks you for any help.

Re:new member. - 2005/10/21 17:57 Welcome!!

The LR and LS you have should be fine. Yes a clean up crew is recommended. Nass snails and small hermits work well. I use HOB filters. Many of them allow you to adjust the flow. I guess this would depend on what brand HOB filter you have. I have not found the ones I have used to produce to much flow. A skimmer is recommended.

In your 20g I would recommend ORs kuda or barbouri. Most of the other species/varieties would do better in a larger tank.

HTH,

Leslie

Re:new member. - 2005/10/21 19:54 Hi luisazucar,

Either the kuda or barbouri should be just fine for a beginner as long as you purchase captive bred seahorses, which is what Ocean Rider provides.

As for color well I am afraid there are no guarantees. Seahorses have what we refer to as a base color and they change from there like a chameleon. Color change is complex. There are many factors which effect color including nutrition, water quality, health, mood, and courting. The kuda and barbs do not usually have purple or any similar shades in their repertoire The Mustangs however will sometimes change to a purplish color but as I said there are no guarantees.
HTH,

Leslie
