New Tank success - 2006/04/17 12:09 Many thanks to you - I have successfully transferred Lucy and Ricky from the 20 gallon hex to a 26 gallon bow tank. They seem to be very happy. I tried to place the live rocks and hitching posts close to where they were in the hex tank. The transfer went smooth on Friday, on Saturday I kept them semi quiet so they could adjust to the new surroundings. The ammonia level did spike slightly on Sunday but I did a 25% water change and the test today (Monday) came out fine.

I am still having a small problem with the feeding station. The shrimp goes down the tube, enters the feeding station (Lucy and Ricky follow it going down and hitch onto it waiting for the food). But the shrimp still washes away. Some remains in the station - so am going to try protecting the station a little more or changing to something deeper. I definetly think it has improved greatly moving from the hex to the bow.

My suggestion is to any new purchasers of seahorses is do not buy a hex tank. It was restictive to even 2 seahorses and extremely difficult to protect the shrimp in a feeding station from blowing away from the filter flow.

Anyway thanks for your help. I will get back to you if I ever get this feeding station straightened out. I do have one other question - do you feed the gobie and cleaner shrimp different food since the shrimp is being put in a feeding station?

Re:New Tank success - 2006/04/17 18:02 Dear Capricorn:

I'm happy to hear that Lucy and Ricky have settled into their new surroundings so well. It sounds like you did an excellent job of making the transfer!

It's good that the frozen Mysis is behaving a little better in their larger accommodations.
If you can find a sheltered spots for your feeding station or otherwise screen it off from the water flow a little better, it should work like a charm.

Yes, gobies and cleaner shrimp are often very fond of the frozen Mysis that is your seahorses' staple diet, so it's customary to feed the other fish and inverts with standard, off-the-shelf aquarium foods first, and and then feed the seahorses once their more active tankmates have had their fill. Otherwise, active fishes and inverts that are relatively aggressive feeders might gobble up all the goodies before the slowpoke seahorses can grab much more than a mouthful.

Best of luck with your new seahorse setup, Capricorn! Here's hoping Lucy and Ricky live Long and prosper in their roomy new accommodations.

Happy Trails!
