Re:Can an H. Kuda that is 3.5 tall eat Red Vol Shrimp - 2005/10/26 20:24
Dear April:
When it comes to size, the Volcano shrimp (Halocaridina rubra), a.k.a. lava shrimp or red feeder shrimp, are not like the grass shrimp or ghost shrimp you may be used to, or even the big frozen Mysis relicta from Piscine Energetics you may be accustomed to feeding your seahorses. The Volcano shrimp are quite a bit smaller. They are bite-sized morsels for any of the greater seahorses, so I think you're 3.5" long kuda should be able to manage them without any difficulty. Certainly I have seen Zulu-lulus (Hippocampus capensis) that were smaller than your kuda wolf them down with great gusto. (Of course, Zulus are notorious gluttons that leave you counting your fingers afterwards whenever you feed them by hand!)
So go ahead and try Volcano shrimp on your H. kuda, April. I'm sure he will attack and eat them greedily.
Best wishes with all your fishes, April!
Happy Trails! Pete Giwojna
